Gabe’s Revenge by Doris O’Connor

Congratulations to Doris O’Connor on your new release!

Thanks so much for having me on your blog with my new Release Gabe’s Revenge. This is book two in my series McLeod Security and a lot darker and longer than the first book. You’ll meet some familiar characters from book one in the series, but don’t worry. There are no spoilers, so the series can be read out of order. 🙂

Gabe and Lissa took me on quite the journey when I was writing their story, so hold on tight, as they find their way to their Happy Ever After.

Revenge is best served cold…

Gabriel Henshaw is nothing but a monster—a ruthless killer—that’s what Lissa Andrini has always been told. Sold to the man by her own father, she fears for her life, yet she can’t help the insane pull she feels to him. It has to be some form of Stockholm syndrome, surely? It couldn’t possibly be the effect of his Dominant nature effortlessly pulling her under his spell and awakening her latent submissive side.

Beating Andrini to a bloody pulp soothes Gabe’s rage temporarily, but that leaves his daughter. Were it not for a promise to her mother, he’d refuse this payment, not least because Lissa Andrini awakens all of his protective and carnal instincts. The perfect counterfoil for his darker needs and desires, she has the power to bring him to his knees.

Can love flourish when you’re a pawn in a dangerous game?

Excerpt:

“Fuck you, Sir.”

The snarky intonation she put on that title, while she yanked her chin up and did her best to stare him down, should have made him do good on his promise to put her over his knee. However, the slight wobble in her bottom lip, coupled with the way every delectable curve of her body was pressed into his frame, meant any such action would be a very bad idea indeed. He wouldn’t be able to keep his hands off of her, and he didn’t want her first time to be angry sex. She deserved better than that.

“Oh, fuck, we will, my dear, but not now and not here.”

Her eyes grew wide, her already fast breaths sped up even more, and Gabe swallowed a groan. He let go of her and stepped back for some much-needed breathing space. As it was his cock was trying his hardest to break out the confines of the denim surrounding it. Gabe couldn’t even remember the last time he wanted a woman this damn much.

“So, you’re going to add rape to your rap sheet. Murdering innocent women wasn’t enough for you?”

A gasp from behind them alerted Gabe to Mavis’s presence, and sure enough when he turned his head it was to see her standing there. Hands pushed into the pockets of her ever-present apron her lips were pressed into a fine line, signaling her disapproval.

“Parkinson is here, Gabe,” she said.

“Thank you, Mavis, I’ll be there in a minute.”

She nodded, glanced at Lissandra and shook her head.

“Tell her the truth, Gabe, all of it. Or this will never work.”

With that, she turned and left them alone on the terrace.

“Oh my God, she knows, doesn’t she? I thought she was nice and I could trust her. Oh, I’m such a fool.”

Lissandra tried to get past him, but he stepped in her way.

“Lissa, don’t.” She pushed against his chest in a vain effort to make him move and then glared up at him.

“Don’t you dare call me that. Only Mama ever called me that. Don’t you fucking dare…” She slammed her hand over her mouth and shook her head. Misery and despair rolled off of her in waves, and Gabe had to fight the urge to take her in his arms. She wouldn’t welcome that move right now, if ever, and now was not the time.

Instead he crossed his arms over his chest, widened his stance, and simply looked at her.

“I’ll call you anything I damn well, please, little girl, and you will lose the attitude. I told you last night, you’re mine now, so you better get used to it. As for Mavis, she is the most loyal person I ever met. Without her, I doubt I would have survived my childhood, so you be nice to her, do you hear me?”

“Or what? You’ll kill me, too?” The mumbled reply grated, and he took several deep breaths to calm himself.

“If I wanted you dead, you’d be six feet under already, girl. After the hit on your father went wrong, I’ve never trusted anyone else to do the killing for me ever again.” He waited for that to sink in, and sure enough her head came up, and she stared wide-eyed, confusion evident on her face.

“I thought… it wasn’t…”

“No, little girl. I’m not such a bastard that I would rob a child of its mother, especially when that mother’s only crime was falling in love and staying with that fucker, Andrini. Besides, I prefer to kill with my hands. Much more satisfying.” He uncrossed his arms and wrapped his hands around her slender throat. Her heartbeat jumped under his palms, and he squeezed just once before he released her. “To feel the life draining out a piece of scum that crossed me … that’s sweet.”

“You’re a monster.” Her whispered reply made him grin.

“Yes, I suppose I am. You better get used to it, little girl, and don’t get any silly ideas of crossing me. You behave and do as you’re told, and we’ll get along just fine.”

She swallowed hard, but gave the tiniest nod, and that would have to do for now.

“Good girl, that wasn’t so hard now, was it?”

“So, you’ll kill me if I don’t behave?”  She mimed quotation marks around that one word and nudged her chin up in a move of defiance that simply served to make him harder. It would be fun to tame all that passion, indeed, and knowing that he would be the first man ever to touch her, to teach her … fuck, what a turn-on that was. Gabe had never cared much about being the first. He wasn’t possessive over the women he fucked. That would mean he cared about them to be anything more than a convenient set of holes to sink his dick into, but this was Lissandra Andrini. His revenge and he was fast beginning to realize his destiny, too. Whether she’d also prove to be his downfall remained to be seen.

“Killing is too easy an out. That’s the only reason Andrini still lives. I want him to suffer, to wallow in his own filth. Death is too good for the likes of him. As for you…” He paused and smiled. “I’ve already told you what I’ll do to you. And once that ass of yours is red raw I will fuck it, so, maybe I’ll kill you after all with the petit mort, at least.”

Her sharp intake of breath almost sounded like a moan, and acting on instinct, he stepped closer, and shoved his hand under her robe to cup her mound. Wet heat greeted his palm, and he smirked, while a blush suffused her pale skin.

“What are you? You can’t … oh…” She tried to clamp her legs together, but one shake of his head stopped her. He forced himself to remove his hand, looked at the glistening evidence of her arousal on his palm and held it up for her to see.

“Protest all you want, Lissa. Hate me if you must, but your body doesn’t lie.” He licked the wetness off his hands and immediately regretted that, as her feminine musk hit his nostrils. Damn, she smelled good.

“I do, I hate you.” Her denial was too breathy to be truly effective, and Gabe laughed.

“No problem, my sweet. You don’t have to like me to enjoy fucking me. Now, go and get dressed, and meet me in the living room in ten minutes. Don’t make me wait, or so help me I drag you out there like this or maybe naked.” He grinned at her simmering outrage. “I’m sure my men would enjoy the view.”

“You wouldn’t dare?”

Gabe threw his head back and laughed.

“Oh, my sweet, never dare the monster.”

Love Changes Everything by Peri Elizabeth Scott

Congratulations to Peri Elizabeth Scott on your new release!

love-changes-everything-evernightpublishing2018-finalimage.jpg

Simon has developed feelings for the girl who bedeviled him growing up, his best friend’s sister–not that Alys is a girl any longer. She’s a grown-up, beautiful, wonderful woman who makes him crazy. He obtains her brother’s permission to ask her out. And is rejected.

Alys is innocent and plans to stay that way until she meets a man who holds the same moral code, regardless of her lengthy crush on Simon. Privy to his escapades and conquests, her jealousy has turned to distaste ans she sets herself on a different path. She wants a man who has refrained from meaningless affairs, who has waited for the special woman. And that’s not Simon!

Simon does the research but Google assures him he can’t become re-virginized and thus Alys is beyond his reach–until one day when he takes her, as a friend, for lunch in his beloved truck. That day, love changes everything.

Excerpt:

“Sorry.” Alys’s response was short but succinct.

Simon waited, but she wasn’t forthcoming with any excuses. “You’re … you’re saying no?”

A quick blink, a sweep of thick, dark lashes before those impossibly golden eyes widened. “I guess I should have said no. But I am sorry.”

It was insane, but he wanted to continue the conversation, even figuring he’d regret it. “Why are you sorry?”

A faint tinge of pink colored her cheekbones and a couple of little white teeth worried a corner of her full bottom lip. “I get asked out a lot. And I know it can’t be easy to get turned down.”

Her reply should have reeked of feminine arrogance, yet it didn’t. If anything, it was considered and thoughtful, and despite the twinge of her rejection, he found himself admiring her for it. But wasn’t that Alys? Kind. Caring.

A hint of surprise followed, confusing him. It didn’t make a lot of sense when he dwelled on it—rarely was he turned down and when it happened, it didn’t bother him. This was different, and a twofer. Huh.

Telling himself it didn’t matter did not stop him from pursuing it like a juvenile trout after a cleverly crafted, manmade fly. “Is there a reason you won’t go out with me?”

Another blink, accompanied by her tucking a strand of silky red-gold hair behind her ear betrayed what he thought was a bit of nervousness, and he thought to back down. Aside from his intense need to have her, Alys brought out some weird emotions in him, ones he might catalog as protectiveness—even possessiveness—and that wasn’t him. Better he let those sleeping dogs lie. He was crazy about her but clearly, the sentiment wasn’t returned.

“Never mind. Forget I asked.” Even to his ears he sounded peevish and decided to add petulant to his rapidly increasing scope of emotions. Time to get gone. He was back to fleeing from her.

She said, “I don’t date men who’ve … been around.

Excerpt:

The shuttle lurched as it landed on the runway, jerking Hannah forward against her restraints. She and her crew had finally reached their destination. Earth’s moon. So close to home, and yet still so far away. With her mission almost over, she looked forward to outlasting the rest of the squadron during physical therapy then returning to the ones she loved. But first, she had to complete shutdown procedures. She pulled down levers and flicked off switches in unison with the rest of the squadron. A well-rehearsed dance they’d perfected when landing on Mars. This time, they flowed through the sequence with ease, as if they landed space shuttles every day.

The engine slowed in its vibrations until it stopped for the first time in two hundred and fifty days. Powered down. But tremors still quaked through Hannah’s body from the inertia. While the squadron waited for the noxious fumes to be blown away, she dreamed of sleep. Just a few hours to rest before she started reconditioning her body for Earth’s gravity. She’d tried to nap while in the crew quarters, but they’d been too close to their lunar landing for her to relax. Ramped up on energy for the past twenty-four hours, her excitement now wore thin, coming down from the rush.

And what was with Colin’s marriage proposal? He knew she had a boyfriend already. Was he delirious? Or maybe very homesick.

“Staff Sergeant Coriveau, is your squadron ready to depart the shuttle?”

Hannah glanced at four eager faces, guys she’d spent the last five years with. “As ready as we’ll ever be, Chief. We’re all very anxious to get back home.” And have a shower. Eat better meal bars. Sleep.

“In time, Staff Sergeant. We’re ready to open the shuttle doors.”

“Understood. See you soon.”

💥 COVER REVEAL: RED BLACK DAWNING 💥

Following a two-month writing break, I’ve deciced to pick up an older story, a dark Frontier romance set in 1865, when the Civil War was about to end and slavery about to be abolished. At the same time, the last of the Natives to hold stand against the “white” invasion, the Ute, were forced to move from their land in the Rockies to a deserted place even the Mormons didn’t want, south of Salt Lake.

RED BLACK DAWNING is a poignant tale of life in the far west over 150 years ago, when major events made drastic and lasting changes to the map and social structure of a strongly divided and chaotic country. The subject has always been very close to my heart, so I’m a little anxious about picking up this story again, but also glad to continue writing as it’s been waiting at 38K for a couple years. I’m seizing the opportunity to reveal its amazing cover created by one of my favorite designers, BetiBup33 😘

BookdesignBetiBup33_2376

Anno 1865. Three regional conflicts, three conflicted hearts.

As the Indian Wars rage in Colorado, Ute hunter Tókwar wanders without purpose after finding his wife and unborn child murdered and mutilated by Unionist militia. Sick with grief, he’s about to leave for the Spirit World when he witnesses a joint Arapaho/Cheyenne attack on a white man’s convoy.

Dog soldier Hevo thirsts for blood. With his band of warriors on the prowl, he aims to avenge the innocents slaughtered at Sand Creek and wipe out all Pale Faces. His plan comes to an abrupt halt when he’s wounded during a raid gone wrong and forced to help assist the dramatic childbirth of a surviving enemy.

Heavily pregnant Annabelle is the daughter of a cotton plantation owner and his black slave. While her fiancé, a renegade Confederate soldier, is imprisoned at Camp Douglas, she flees the Civil War-ravaged Arkansas with a group of settlers to build a new home at the western frontier—only to find herself the sole survivor of an Indian assault.

Becoming responsible for a newborn amid the chaos and pain gives Tókwar some solace, but he knows it’s temporary. The beautiful, feisty mixed-blood mother is restless, and despite his growing attraction for her and fatherly love for her son, he and Hevo must travel east and return her safely to her man. But how will he enter the Pale Faces’ war zone without risking his life—or once more losing his heart?

Excerpt

“Wake the fuck up! Come on, Ray, wake up.”

Jared gripped Ray’s upper arms and shook him again. No response. Nobody sleeps that soundly. For Christ’s sake, he looked catatonic, like the woman in The Fall of the House of Usher, who’s pronounced dead and then buried alive. Now Jared was scared. He considered throwing cold water on him, maybe calling for an ambulance. He shook Ray again.

Slowly, Ray opened his right eye. An explosion in Afghanistan took his left eye years ago.

“Jared?” Ray mumbled.

“Yeah, Jared. Were you expecting someone else?”

Ray looked around the room. He seemed confused.

“Snap out of it, man. I couldn’t wake you.”

“I’m awake. I’m awake.” Ray stretched. He looked like he wanted to go back to sleep.”

“You scared the hell out of me.”

“Sorry. I must have been dreaming.”

“Must have been some dream. There’s a wet spot on the bed.”

Ray checked the sheets. He looked surprised. “Sorry.”

“Forget it, Sexy.” Jared climbed into bed with him. “Tell me all the dirty details. I want to get off too.”

“You know I never remember my dreams.” Ray rolled out of bed. “I better change the sheets.”

Jared made a grab for him. “Later.”

Ray evaded him. “Look at the time, Jared.”

“You used to call me Baby?” Jared spoke more harshly than he intended.

“Fuck the sheets, and the time. We own the company. Let’s go in late. Better yet, let’s take the day off.”

“We can’t afford to close shop, even for one day. Too many P.I.’s in Jersey. The completion is killing us. ”

“We’re the new guys in town. All we need is a big profile case and the clients will be knocking our door down.”

“I hope so.” Ray headed toward the bathroom. “I’m gonna shower.”

“Come back, I’ll give you a tongue bath instead.”

The bathroom door slammed behind Ray. Worried, Jared lay back with his arms under his head. Ray never wanted to fuck anymore. He always had an excuse. I’m too tired. It’s late. I’m drunk. I have a headache.

The sex had been dwindling for months. Six months to be exact. Ever since Remus showed up and screwed up their lives. If he was just another man Jared could handle the competition, but Remus was larger than life, a superhero who’d come from Ray’s past to claim him.

When I was first invited to take part in this project, I had three different professions in mind for my sexy blue-collar hero. A ship welder, jackhammer operator, and big rig diesel mechanic. All of them were yummy, and it was too hard to decide and pick just one. What did I do? I took it to my peeps in my FB group, Slip Between the Pages with London. I Love them!! After putting it to a vote, the winner was…big rig diesel mechanic and my hero, Kash Caldwell, was born.

Destiny Happened blurb

Desi
Of course, I noticed Mr. Shirtless. With a bod like his, who wouldn’t? But his hot-factor didn’t matter. What did? My asshat ex and the need to make him jealous. So, I strolled up to the panty-melting stranger as though I knew him and laid one on him, hoping said asshat would see I’d moved on just fine without him. Only, he never saw me kissing another man.

Kash
I spotted her—honey-blonde hair gleaming in the sun as she came my way. I’d flirt. Smile. Maybe get her number. I sure the hell didn’t expect her to toss her arms around my neck, mashing her body against mine, and kiss the ever-loving shit out of me. Then, she stopped. Stepped back. Blushed. Whispered “Sorry” and blended into the crowd.

I never got her name that day. Or her number. However, fate had other plans and Destiny happened…again.

Destiny Happened excerpt

Desi

“Stupid, stupid, stupid…”

My breathless mutterings were meant for no one but me. Because seriously, I was stupid. Look up the word in the dictionary and you’d see a big ol’ picture of my dumb face. I’d just kissed a stranger and ran. A ‘kiss and run’ if you will. Not only was I stupid, but I might also be insane. Like, total zonkers!

Why did I do what I did?

Okay. The why was simple. Or, at least, I thought it was at the time. I wanted to make my ex jealous. Show the douche-canoe I’d moved on just fine without his no good ass. Let him know he’d been easy to forget. Prove I was so over him, it wasn’t even funny.

You’re probably thinking the ex? Let me back up a bit.

When a group of Oktoberfester’s shifted, most of them watching the hip-wiggle/ass-jiggle Linds was doing, someone started catcalling. This had me looking in the direction of the whistles, and that’s when I became aware of Mr. Shirtless. With the chiseled cheekbones of a Greek God, he stood a few feet away in low-slung denim—glistening in the sun.

Hello! With a rock-hard bod like his, who wouldn’t notice?

I’m pretty sure he hadn’t been the whistler, but I was certain he had been watching Lindy. Then his gaze slid to me as I took him in. Honestly, the man’s abs alone should be bronzed. It was like I’d stepped into one of those hot guy calendar shoots, his more than a six-pack rippling.

And did I mention glistening? I think I did, but it’s worth mentioning again.

That man’s midsection with the V-cut was enough to bring a grown woman to her knees in adoration. But just as I was about to stop myself from gawping at all those large, well-defined muscles flexing as the tall, dark-haired hottie wiped sweat from his bare chest, someone else redirected my attention.

Jenner.

Of all the places the asshat could be, there he was, mixed in with a group to Mr. Shirtless’s left! He shouldn’t have mattered. I shouldn’t have allowed the sight of him to burrow under my skin, but there was no helping it. Jenner had his arm curled around the shoulders of that woman as they strolled along a line of vendors—she smiling up at him all happy while he winked down at her.

Heat, and not from the sun, prickled along the back of my neck.

Seeing them out together—him more attentive to her than he’d ever been with me—pissed me the hell off. Thus, I made a rash decision and did something completely nuts. I strolled up to Mr. Shirtless like I knew him and laid one on him.

Or maybe he laid one on me.

Either way, we kissed. Hard. With tongue. And he smelled good. Clean sweat and something a bit caramel-spiced. And the way my stranger pulled me into him—alpha male possessive—God help me. Though, the real ‘holy wow’ moment came when I realized the man had developed an impressive erection while thrusting his tongue against mine, and he wasn’t afraid to use it.

Truth here. Stranger or not, when he pressed himself against me—hard and commanding—lightning struck my core.

Let’s just say, lip-locking with Mr. Shirtless had been, well… kind of mind-blowing. And after, when he looked into my eyes—his the color of chocolate swirled with honey gold—I think I lost my ability to breathe.

Then, Bam! Reality hit me.

Not only had I made a complete and total fool of myself, but my spur-of-the-moment decision hadn’t worked. Jenner and the skank had strolled on by—engrossed in each other. He never noticed me nor my brilliant public display of kissing the lips off another man.

Slowing to more of a power walk than a run, I glanced around. “Shit!” I’d been so hell-bent to just go, I’d gone in the complete opposite direction of where I’d left Lindy.

Body jittery with adrenaline, I turned around and started on my way back to her.

“Hey, babe. There you are.” Lindy strolled up, handed me a strip of chicken teriyaki on a stick, and frowned. “Where did you go? I lost you for a little while.”

“Jenner,” I said, disgusted. “He’s here.”

“Is that why you’re all flushed?” Her head jerked around as though ready to go another round with him and the skank. “Did the buttmunch say something to you?”

“No. I kind of strolled up to some random hot guy and kissed him to make the asshole jealous, but he didn’t even notice.”

Lindy’s eyes went wide. “Say what?”

With a nod, I spilled. Jenner with the woman. How they looked together. Mr. Shirtless. The PDA. The entire crazy tale.

When I was done, my bestie grabbed my shirt sleeve. “Show me the guy.”

“No way.” I shook my head. “I made a complete fool of myself and added to it by running away, Linds. I can’t take you to see him. I’m embarrassed enough as it is.”

“Come on. We’ll just stroll but keep our distance, and you can point him out.”

I groaned. “What if he sees me?”

“We’ll be sneaky.” She tugged at me. “Let’s go.”

“All right. This way.”

Being careful not to be noticed, I led Linds over toward Pops Brats, only I didn’t see Mr. Shirtless.

“He’s not around,” I said.

“Damn it.” Lindy sounded disappointed.

And me? Well, I couldn’t be sure if I was relieved my sexy stranger was no longer there or despondent I’d never see him again.

Slater’s Claim by Amber Morgan

Congratulations to Amber Morgan on your new release!

Thank you for having me today! I’m so excited to share SLATER’S CLAIM with everyone! This is book three in my Wild Blood MC series, and it really marks a change for the boys of Wild Blood as I up the stakes, expand the world, and throw a whole lot of trouble at everyone!

But the most important part of the book is, of course, the love story! Slater and Freya have a rocky road to happiness, but don’t worry – I make sure they get there! Of course, it wouldn’t be much fun if there wasn’t some drama on the route…

She won’t be tied down.

He won’t be told no.

Slater is used to being in control. Freya Markham is testing his limits. But Freya’s problems could destroy her, and Slater just can’t let that happen. He’s going to fix things, whether she likes it or not.

Excerpt

This is good, she told herself, searching desperately for a silver lining. The more money Sammy took, the quicker she paid off her debt. She wished her first private customer had paid up. Bitterness stole through her as she headed back into the club. He’d been hot as hell, unexpectedly so, with that messed-up dark hair and smooth voice. Watching him get off to her dancing had been a powerful aphrodisiac that she hadn’t found with any of the other guys she’d performed for tonight.

But then the asshole had stiffed her, and because he’d said he was with security, she’d been too afraid to ask Benedict about the missing money. For all she knew, he could be one of Sammy’s guys.

She hobbled wearily across the empty dance floor. It was nearly three in the morning, and all the waitresses and other dancers were gone. A couple of cleaners mopped the floor and collected glasses. With the stage lights off and the stark house lights up, the club looked tawdry and soulless, and that was how Freya suddenly felt as well. All the eroticism and triumph had fled her, gone along with the money she’d earned.

She wished Sefina had stuck around. It would have been nice to share a ride home with her and commiserate – although she doubted Sefina was giving up most of her earnings to Sammy.

One of the bouncers, a Jamaican guy with long dreadlocks, was outside smoking when she left. She nodded at him in greeting, hugging herself. The pre-dawn air was crisp and cool, pleasant enough now when she was still so warm from dancing all night, but she knew she’d be shivering before long.

“You got a ride?” the bouncer asked her.

She shrugged. “I was going to walk.”

He eyed her outfit. She was back in jeans and a t-shirt, but still in heels, because she’d stupidly thought she was too used to walking in heels for it to bother her. A lesson learned: walking in heel was one thing, dancing in them was another entirely.

“Call a cab,” he said. “I’ll wait with you.”

She thought of the slim stack of notes in her purse, then thought of the forty-minute walk back to her apartment and decided a cab was a better plan. While she called a local firm, she looked the bouncer over more carefully, noting the leather vest he wore under his hoodie. There was a simple patch at the bottom, black with white letter. Prospect.

“You’re in an MC?” she asked when she hung up.

“Yes ma’am,” he said.

“You and the other guys that were here when I auditioned?”

He nodded, taking another drag on his cigarette that made the cherry-red tip glow hot in the darkness.

“So you know the guy, the brown-haired guy? Tall, big…arms?”

He gave her a knowing grin. “Slater? Yeah, I know Slater.”

She mulled on that. Being in a MC didn’t mean Slater had no connections to Sammy. She didn’t pretend to be an expert, but whenever she saw anything about MCs in the news, it was invariably bad. Turf wars, drugs, gun-running… The knot in her stomach twisted a little tighter.

“You want me to pass a message to him?” the bouncer asked, a teasing note in his voice.

Freya frowned, scanning the empty road for her cab. “No,” she said firmly. “Absolutely not.”

And you can pick up the first two books in the Wild Blood MC series, TANNER’S WAR and WOLF’S HUNT, today too!

Will turned to address the men again, but did not release her from his grip. “Have a good look at this beauty, gents.”

As they gawked at her, she stood straight and proud as though daring someone to try and claim her, returning their gazes with scathing, cold eyes, her fair lips pressed into a tight line. After one quick scan of crowd before her, she shot an icy glare at Will, who let go of her and backed off.

Colin chuckled. Could this petite thing be the reason for the bruise on Will’s cheek? She radiated anger, was so alive with it that it cast off her like the heat of a flame.

Will strolled to one corner of the platform as though nothing dramatic had just occurred. “Now, where shall we start the bidding?”

“What skills does she have?” asked one of the men.

“Yeah, can she work a terminal?” asked another.

“A bit scrawny for farm work. Looks like the most she’d be able to do is keep the house clean,” someone else commented. That was followed by snickering from the cluster of men around him.

The woman tossed her head and the dark strands of her hair gleamed onyx in the light of the double suns. “I do not do menial labor.”

She reminded Colin of warrior princesses in tales. And it was obvious to him that she was unused to being handled the way she was right now.

The trader wagged his eyebrows and strolled to the other side of the platform. “Who cares what skills she has? Come now. Let’s start the bidding. With a woman of this quality, why would you ever want her to leave the bedroom?”

The deep multi-toned chuckle of men followed his statement. But Colin wasn’t among them. Instead, he frowned, and started making his way forward to end the show.

“Who will give me twenty credits?” the trader shouted. “Twenty credits for the loveliest creature you’ve ever seen.”

The woman stood with her head held high, eyes distant, stance hard as the rock that formed the distant red mountains of Garrulus Four.

The men shuffled and murmured amongst themselves. Given the kind of lives they led, beauty was a luxury far outweighed by the many other qualities they needed in a wife. This lot of men were used to leading quiet lives, and they wanted women who did the same or went along with it at least. The woman on the platform would not fit in with this plan. Even if one of them could afford her, Colin doubted they’d be able to handle her.

Will’s eyebrows were high with shock. “Nobody?” He stopped his movement on the platform and pulled his head back in an exaggerated way, making his potbelly poke forward from the coat he wore. “No one will pay twenty credits for this gorgeous creature? That’s a bargain for someone like her.”

Colin saw one corner of the woman’s mouth quirk upward in satisfaction, and he grinned again. Obviously, she felt like she was winning so far, but what would be the consequences? She’d already stated she wouldn’t work, and she’d failed to declare any skills. If all she had to trade was beauty, she was on the wrong planet.

“Eighteen credits then. Who will pay eighteen?” Will called, an edge of desperation in his voice now. “You’ve all become shy suddenly. Suffering from performance anxiety, perhaps? Who wouldn’t be with her around, eh?” He chortled and leered at the woman.

Colin could see the men glancing at each other. Who would be crazy enough to take on the beautiful spitfire? That’s what it came down to, their masculinity. Clearly they found themselves lacking, because none of them were brave enough to bid.

As the silence stretched on, a warm wind whooshed through, audible in the vacuum of stillness. It was only then that the woman’s stance thawed. Her shoulders rounded, and worry transformed her eyes from their sparkling glare to the round-eyed, lost look of an innocent. The pink lips softened and parted revealing surprise at the group’s rejection, and Colin’s heart went out to her.

“Eighteen credits!” His hand shot up in the air before he even realized that the words had left his lips.

Heart of Flame by Janine Ashbless

Congratulations to Janine Ashbless on your re-release! I’m very happy to have you here as I recently published a romance set in the same world as yours and can easily imagine the atmosphere, the mystic, and the heat in Heart of Flame 🙂

I’m also glad your heroine, Taqla, agreed to talk a little bit about her adventure and – although she seems reluctant to admit it – her heart’s desire…

Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Lea!

My romantic novel, Heart of Flame, has now been republished after reverting to me when Samhain Books closed down in 2017. I’ve given it a new cover and another textual polish and I’m hoping it will find new readers who love the Arabian Nights fantasy setting as much as I do!

Heart of Flame D2D (1).jpg

The most beautiful woman in all Arabia has been abducted by a djinni – and only forbidden magic can bring about her rescue.

Taqla the sorceress lives in comfortable secrecy, until she agrees to help the handsome traveller Rafiq find the kidnapped daughter of the Amir. They set off together on a journey fraught with magic and peril, though a landscape of ancient desert ruins, terrible monsters and deception. With so many secrets to keep, Taqla cannot afford to trust Rafiq – and yet she must, with her life.

In the meantime, the captive Ahleme must try to fend off the attentions of the terrifying djinni who wishes to father upon her a new saviour of the Djinn race. Can Ahleme survive her imprisonment? Can Taqla really bring herself to help Rafiq win Ahleme back, when she is hopelessly in love with him herself? Can she trust him not to betray her, when sorcery is a crime punishable by death?  Passion may yet betray them all.

Where did the idea for Heart of Flame come from?

I’ve wanted to write an Arabian Nights fantasy for ages. Are you old enough to remember movies like Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, or The Thief of Baghdad? I found those so exciting when I was a kid – the costumes, the magic, the monsters and the adventure (Oh my goodness – Ray Harryhausen plasticine stop-motion monsters! How I love them!). I really just wanted to write a Sinbad story, but with added hot romance and strong female characters.

The Middle East has fascinated me for years. I’ve actually been lucky enough to visit Egypt and Jordan and Turkey and Syria (before the current war), and the natural beauty and the layers of history accreted in these countries just blow me away. And in the medieval period in particular, a time when Brits like me were living in mud huts, the Middle East was enjoying a golden age of learning and civilisation.

Plus, I love 19th Century Orientalist art – that is, paintings by people like Jean-Léon Gérôme of bazaars and harems and caravanserai. They’re obsessively realistic in detail and incredibly atmospheric, all filtered through a Victorian mindset of exoticism and romance, nervousness and wonder. I wanted to write that.

An Interview with my Heroine, Taqla:

JA: Hello Taqla. So – you’re a sorceress?

Taqla: Shush! Don’t tell everyone that! It’s a capital crime in Damascus and if I’m discovered by the Amir’s men I’ll be executed!

JA: So how do you manage to live?

Taqla: By subterfuge. My house belongs to the aged astrologer Umar – that’s me of course, disguised by magic as an old man if I have to receive visitors. And if I want to go out into the bazaar then I go as his man-slave Zahir, who’s young and cheery and gets by without anyone really noticing him. I mean, it’s just much easier being a man in this day and age, if you have the choice. I never show my real face or figure in public. No one knows who I really am.

JA: That sounds incredibly lonely. No one at all?

Taqla: Well, there’s my housekeeper, Lelia. And …

JA: And Rafiq the Traveller?

Taqla: I didn’t mean for him to discover my secret! But I found it too difficult to hold my magical disguise together when I was with him. My concentration just fell apart and then I’d suddenly find myself back in female form.

JA: Because you’re in love with him, that’s right?

Taqla: No – You can’t say that! I would never do anything as stupid as fall in love with a man – it’s far too dangerous for a sorceress to put herself at risk like that. I’ve got more sense. I can’t trust any man, least of all one like Rafiq. He’s too clever and too curious.

JA: And brave, and charming, and filled with wanderlust. And really good-looking, right?

Taqla:  Please, you sound like Lelia. She warned me not to take to the desert with Rafiq. [sighs] Maybe she was right. When we were attacked by ghouls he discovered my secret and now I don’t know what will happen.

JA: Can you trust him to keep your secret?

Taqla: I don’t know. He needs my powers to find the Amir’s daughter. She’d been abducted by a djinni and Rafiq will never save her without magical help. He really wants that. She’s been promised to the man who will rescue her and that’ll mean he becomes the heir to Damascus. Not to mention the fact that she is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the world…

JA: So how do you feel about helping him save her, then?

Taqla: I don’t know what to say about that. It’s a good thing I am not in love with him, isn’t it? Otherwise it would be unbearable to spend my days and nights at his side, facing all sorts of dangers, trusting him with my life and watching over his. Knowing that he’s doing it all for another woman. Completely unbearable.

JA: Oh, Taqla…
