The Tattered Bride by Peri Elizabeth Scott

Congratulations to Peri Elizabeth Scott on your new release!

Childhood traumas lurk deep. Victoria Sparrow knows that. Especially when one’s father rejects one as not being worthy. Her romantic relationships founder, until Logan Doherty. He gives her reason to believe in goodness and true love, and she commits her heart and soul to him.

No longer prey to her damaged, young self, Victoria eagerly looks forward to their upcoming marriage—until she meets Logan at the altar. He informs her the wedding is off before their assembled friends and family, and will not tell her why.

Cast back into the nightmare of rejection, a devastated Victoria undertakes the momentous task of putting her life back together, her trust broken, her worst fears realized.

Meanwhile, Logan is working equally hard to deal with the secretive events that led to that cruel rejection, and then he plans to make it up to his tattered bride. If she will forgive him.

Excerpt:

The world narrowed to him and her, and a little slice of churning emotions she couldn’t decipher. “You’re calling off the wedding. Our wedding. Now.” Just in case she hadn’t heard him correctly. This had the makings of a horrible, sick joke…

Shoving a hand through his hair, he obviously struggled to meet her stare. His tawny eyes were turbulent. “I am. I … just decided. It’s—”

“What?” Victoria tumbled to it, falling into the abyss of her history. Deep down, she knew why. Too bad he’d only just decided. Now. At this inopportune time. All her issues and stupid insecurities washed over her from wherever they’d been banished to, banished by Logan’s resolute pursuit and sincere belief in her. He’d addressed her fears, made her whole—and now? Now her tender underbelly was exposed—without a shred of armor—for the deathblow. The sublime lovemaking of a mere few hours earlier faded in the face of it.

“I—” Real pain and misery now seemed to burn in his eyes, and despite her terrified anticipation, she wanted to soothe him. Through set lips, he continued, “I don’t have the words to tell you why Victoria. I’m sorry. But the wedding is off.”

Still, she waited, believing he would somehow embellish, give her an explanation that wouldn’t make this about her, but he stood there mutely, now staring someplace over her shoulder. She checked out the direction of that gaze—maybe there was an answer there, but she saw only a watercolor of a pastoral scene. Please.

She let her pride crumble and begged. “Logan. This doesn’t make any sense. We… Only this morning…”

He shook his head and straightened to his full height. “It’s off.”

Deep inside there was an utter certainty that it did indeed make sense. He’d figured her out. Seen to the core of her the way others had. In despair, she gave up the fight to believe in him and their love in response to his firm declaration. The Victoria of her childhood emerged, in blind response, lashing out to hide from the truth.

“Was it the thrill of the chase? And then when you caught me, you became afraid you were settling? That there’s something better around the corner?”

She didn’t want to wait for a response. She had to leave. Now. What would get her past the sideways looks and the knowing stares? The church was full of family and friends—and others who had probably predicted this very moment…

“Victoria. You need to calm down. It’s not like that.”

“Calm. Down?” She was aware her voice was climbing as she talked over him, and the small room, the one where she and Logan would have been closeted to sign the papers finalizing their marriage, wasn’t soundproof. She modulated her tone the very best she could, humiliation and pain squeezing her very being. “What is it like, then, exactly?”

“I can’t say.”

“Tell me.”

He looked away. “I can’t.”

Dropping her beautiful bouquet of red roses, entwined with baby’s breath and white, embossed ribbon on the desk, the air currents disturbed the uncompleted marriage papers. They fluttered, mocking her. She stared up at the face of the man she loved. And faced the realization that she indeed still loved him. That part, at least, hadn’t changed despite the mortification of being dumped at the freaking altar. Love. She thought it was love. Too bad it wasn’t real.

“And I’m supposed to take that and be calm!”

“Yes, calm down.” His face was set in grim determination, his eyes hot. “We’ll … we’ll get through this.”

She narrowed her eyes and leaned into him. What couldn’t she be one of those classy women who took this kind of thing in stride and walked away without making a scene? Maybe she could be. Drawing on a reserve of strength she wasn’t aware she possessed, she said, “I’m calm. Dead calm. So shut up now. I never want to hear your voice again, let alone set eyes on you.”

Squaring her shoulders, she closed off his next attempt to speak. She avoided his outstretched hand and ignored the sudden abject despair written across his handsome features. Was he embarrassed? If he didn’t want a scene, why in hell had he chosen this public place to dump her? Flinging the door open to the main part of the church, she surveyed the people filling the pews. Those congregated there stilled into silence, with only an occasional murmur marring the quiet. Dozens of pairs of eyes looked in their direction. Victoria stepped forward. Classy. She could do this.

Interview with Siobhan Shannon:

Which of your book’s characters is most like you and why?

Olivia and I share a great deal. Like Liv, I never seem to understand the rules until I break one. Like her, I love first and ask questions later, and most of all like her, I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make happiness for myself and my loved ones.

What was your biggest challenge in writing your current release?

The editing process is hard. Having someone meddle with my writing gives me the heebee-geebies. I have to take a deep breath and pretend it isn’t my writing that I’m revising. When it gets really bad, I go to yoga.

When did you know you were destined to be a writer?

About the fifth grade. My mom saved a story for me from back then in my little-girl handwriting with magazine pictures for illustrations. I think the teacher even did some editing for me in red. I’ve been writing ever since, everything from essays and blog posts to poems, novels and short stories. In college, professors would assign papers and everyone else would be like, “Ah, man, another paper,” and I’d be like, “Yay! Another paper.” I started submitting my writing to publishers when I was 18. Eventually, I began to find the right places for my writing.  I love telling stories and I always have. One of my friends called me a reconteuse. I had to go look it up, but she’s right, that’s exactly what I am.

Speed Round (just to get to know you better):

Coffee, tea or other: Coffee in the morning, bubbly water in the afternoon, and tea when I’m feeling low.

Music preference: Irish traditional and Jazz. There’s a surprising crossover between the two.

Favorite movie: Treasure of the Sierra Madre, with Humphrey Bogart. It’s a lesson in human nature.

Dog, cat, or other: I love my Lab. Not oddly at all, she loves me.

Favorite author: Graham Greene, particularly The Power and the Glory.  Patrick Rothfuss is great, and I’ve recently discovered Neil Gaiman.

Favorite actor: David Tenant

Favorite television show: MASH. This little gem got me through the darkest hours of my life.

Excerpt:

I didn’t set out to deliberately ruin my life. I don’t guess anyone does, and then when the walls come crashing down, it’s just so . . . surprising. One day you wake up and nothing looks the same anymore and the next, people are asking you why you’re destroying their lives. I don’t know. I woke up on one of those desperately close mornings in July when the air feels like a blanket and nothing was the same any more. I didn’t even like my coffee the same way anymore. It might have been meeting Daisy Bledsoe. Or it could have been a virus, God only knows. All I can tell you is that on that morning, everything changed.

She wasn’t the prettiest girl I ever saw. She was tall and weathered and snaggle-toothed, but when she smiled her face lit up and you couldn’t resist smiling too. She certainly wasn’t the smartest girl I ever met, either. There were times I wanted to pull my hair out over the things she did. But on that July morning, she mesmerized me, and before I knew it I was making decisions that snowballed into a freight train that could have ruined my life. Strange but true, I think I’d do it all over again.

I must have been about twenty when Pa sent me to Tom Harmon’s place to see if he had a fuel pump for our old tractor. I had never been out to Harmon’s before and missed my turn. I came down a road that just kept getting narrower until I had no choice but to go forward. I found myself on a grass track that petered out among dead machines and rusting farm implements in front of her house. I finally found a place where I could turn around, but that was when I met Daisy.

It was hot and I had the windows down. I came round a bend and a big black dog decided I didn’t belong there. He jumped up at the window of Pa’s truck raising hell. All I could do is hit the brakes and lean away.

“Max!” I heard a voice like a sack of gravel shout, “Come heah.” Max shut up and left the side of my truck, making me happy. One look at her, and I knew I was lost.

“Can I help you?”

“I believe you already have.”

“Now, shake that hair” #SexySnippet from The Hotter the Love

sexysnippets-fbbanner_14_orig

Happy Sunday!!

Here are my #SexySnippets, seven sentences from The Hotter the Love, book 3 of the erotic interracial romance Hot Model Mine trilogy:

* * *

Yushka saunters to the middle of the room and slides his shirt off his bulging arms, taking his time, contorting his toned torso so I can note all the fantastic details. It’s obvious he’s a professional. Maybe he should consider doing movies, too. Erotic movies.

I nod in appreciation. “Now, shake that hair.”

He obeys, holding my look while untying his ponytail and letting his long hair loose like a waterfall of blackness down his large shoulders. With slow dance moves of his hips, he proceeds to unbuckle his belt, pulls it out of his pants’ waistband with a swoosh, and throws it to the floor where it coils like a snake at my feet.

After sexy cover model Yushka proposed, life is more turbulent than ever for erotic romance author Andrea. He is expecting a baby with his ex-girlfriend, who says she doesn’t want to keep it. How will Andrea’s sons take upcoming life changes? To make things more complicated, her ex goes to great lengths to coax her back, and one of her sons’ girlfriend is a tad too interested in Andrea’s young and very handsome fiancé…

On the writing front, Andrea anxiously awaits news on her latest manuscript submission, and she has to decide whether to accept her publisher’s offer to model in a sexy photo shoot—the same kind she and Yushka did in Cannes—in the hopes of making a new “Cover Photo of the Year”. Considering the erotic poses the previous photographer demanded, can Andrea model with another guy other than Yushka?

Excerpt:

Reine sighed. “Can we talk about something else?”

“Sure,” she agreed. She observed him for an instant. His eyes were closed. Her gaze traveled across his nose and over to his full lips. Damn it if she didn’t want to kiss him. She lay back down, trying to still her beating heart. “What would you like to talk about?” she asked.

“How about this insane attraction we’re both feeling?”

“What?” Mystique squeaked.

“You heard me.”

Mystique shut her eyes as she heard the rustle of his clothes. She didn’t dare open them.

“I haven’t felt so attracted to any woman in over two years, and from what you’ve told me, it’s been a while for you too.”

Eight years, she thought. She’d kept herself away from one-night stands and sex with others in general, afraid she’d become angry and bitter again if things didn’t work out. She played with her toys and enjoyed her body on her own. It had been enough, until Reine. He was driving her hormones crazy.

“Well, yes.” She licked her lips.

“Damn it, woman, do you know what that does to me?”

Mystique gasped as Reine’s lips brushed against hers.

“It makes me want to devour your mouth,” he whispered.

“I’m sorry,” she said, sounding breathless to her own ears.

“Don’t be. Look at me,” Reine said gruffly.

She opened her eyes and found his face inches away. The intensity of his gaze was like looking into a pool of flaming desire that threatened to consume her.

“I thought—”

“Don’t think. It’ll make it easier.”

She didn’t have time to issue a protest as he lowered his head and kissed her. They both groaned as their lips melded against each other. His teeth snagged on her bottom lip, pulling slightly and making her body react like a fire alarm at the first hint of smoke. His tongue licked a path across her bottom and upper bow, and she eagerly opened up for him, needing to taste more. Her nipples hardened beneath her top.

Reine pulled her up into a sitting position and smashed his lips against hers. He possessed her mouth with his, not with strength, but with the ability of a man who knew what he was doing. His tongue delved deep, intertwining with hers. Mystique moaned. Her mind went blank, her senses taking priority over anything else. All she could do was feel the touch of his hand on her back, and the warmth of his mouth against hers.

Breathless, they both pulled back after a few minutes. Her hands trembling, she pushed a few strands of his hair away from his face. Reine kissed her gently. She angled her head and he explored her mouth at a more leisurely pace.

“You drive me insane,” he whispered. “This is not normal,” he insisted.

Mystique giggled.

“I want to fuck you,” he groaned into her ear. He brought her hand to his cock. Eagerly, she stroked him over his jeans. Liquid rushed to coat her panties and a dull ache began to throb between her legs.

“And what are you waiting for?”

“I can’t. Not here. Not after what you’ve told me.”

“What?” She placed a hand on his chest and pushed back. “What do you mean?”

Revenant Investigations by Libby Bishop

Congratulations to Libby Bishop on your new release!

Revenant-Investigations-evernightpublishing-2016-ebook.jpg

***THREE BOOKS IN ONE***

Ghosts of Kingston Cottage (Book One)

Medium and paranormal investigator Arabella Pierce is sent with her crew to Kingston Cottage, a haunted Maine seafarer’s cottage on an isolated island. For this investigation, her boss has stuck them with skeptical reporter Lucas Brown. Though he’s hot as they come, Arabella can’t trust a man whose sole job is to discredit her and the work she does. Not after what happened with the last few skeptics…

All Lucas may want is the truth, but that doesn’t change her feelings towards him. And when the ghosts appear, she and Lucas must work together—in tight quarters—to convince the resident ghosts to move on before a storm strands the entire crew on the island. Can Arabella put aside her prejudices long enough to see what the ghosts are trying to tell her? And if she does, will she and Lucas have a shot at a lifetime?

Ghosts of Trenton House (Book Two)

Empath and paranormal investigator Lena Tompson is enjoying a night of relaxation when she’s interrupted by a phone call from her boss. She hurries to the office, still in her pajamas, and finds herself face to face with the once love-of-her-life.

Knox Trenton, also an empath, has a problem: his beloved great-grandmother has accidentally conjured the spirit of her dead sister while trying to find the spirit of her dearly departed husband, who died decades earlier. The sisters have fought bitterly since his death.

As the case heats up, so do Lena’s feelings for Knox. She doesn’t know how long she can hold back the tide of emotions, especially when she realizes that Knox has feelings for her as well. She can only hope that trusting him doesn’t tear her apart as deeply as his own family will be torn if they fail to stop the fighting.

Ghosts of Emerald Bay (Book Three)

Kate Briar is enjoying her vacation when her boss calls her to the office about a job. As head researcher for Revenant Investigations—a paranormal investigation team—she’s unsure why he sounds so wary about her taking the case. After all, there’s very few people in Noble, Maine she’d refuse to work with. She’s even more uncertain about his hesitation when he announces that the case is one she’s dreamed of since she was a teenager. That is, until he tells her who she’ll be working with.

Murphy O’Keefe is a well-known legend hunter. He chases the legends of the dead for profit. Kate used to be good friends with him, and they were growing much closer before he betrayed her. She was helping him with a case when she woke up one morning to find all of her research and all of the artifacts she’d found gone—she hasn’t seen him since.

To keep things civil, she offers him a truce, not wanting to spoil the importance of the new case. But she doesn’t realize the turmoil of anger and attraction that truce will ignite. Nor that her fate is directly in the hands of the man that broke her heart.

Enjoy this excerpt:

In the space of a moment, as the DJ dropped the track into a deep reverberating bass, Tyler’s entire world tilted. One second he was dancing with Scarlett, the next second she was in his arms kissing him and everything around them fell away. He felt as though he were zipping through a tunnel of space-time as colors and sounds warped, looking and sounding odd. And then, he returned to himself. Only, he wasn’t quite himself. Someone else took up a good portion of the space inside him now and that person was taking control.

td-600-by-600 “Scarlett,” he breathed, packing all the love that he felt into the syllables of her name. He brushed her blond bangs back from her face and skimmed his fingers down her smooth cheek. Suddenly, Tyler’s entire perception of Scarlett shifted and he now looked at her with new eyes. It was as if he had been near-sighted and was suddenly given glasses. Instead of the cute blond stranger he’d met, she was his entire world, his reason for living. The potent feelings of love and admiration, and memories of his intimate connection with her, flooded his mind, pushing aside all that he had known before. They were so strong the Tyler could no longer figure out who he was separate from them. He knew they were not his feelings and memories, yet he didn’t fight them. They were filled with such happiness that he was actually eager to embrace them. His mind had somehow been unlocked to allow in the cornucopia of memories of a perfect life. He didn’t question where they came from and he had no desire to shut them out. And in the process, as he filled with them, he could feel his soul begin to drift somewhere into a corner of his being.

“Nick?” Scarlett cupped his face in both hands. “Is it really you?”

This time it was not Tyler who answered. “Yes. It’s me, babe.”

Scarlett wrapped her arms around him in a bone-crushing hug, and he could feel her back heave with sobs of joy. “I can’t believe it. After all this time. How? Why? No. I don’t care. I’m just so glad you’re here. I’ve waited so long.”

Nick wrapped his arms around her, stroked her silky hair, and kissed the top of her head. Then he leaned in close to whisper in her ear the words that burned on his lips to be spoken. “I love you.”

She pulled back and looked at him with tear-filled eyes. “I love you, too!”

NEW HOT RELEASE: DARK & DIRTY, A DARK EROTIC FANTASY ANTHOLOGY

Woohoo! The anthology Dark & Dirty, co-written by fantastic authors D.C. Stone, Kastil Eavenshade, and R. Brennan and with an introduction by USA Today bestselling author Jenika Snow, is live.

Enjoy 🙂

Dark and Dirty

Four dangerously dark and delicious stories that will awaken your dirtiest fantasies.

NOT ONE NIGHT by D.C. Stone:

One night of pleasure isn’t worth losing a lifetime of friendship. Or a reputation. Or a career. A spot in the social standing. That irritating innocence. Or the always-so-present pride.

But it is worth losing her heart.

REDEEMER by Kastil Eavenshade:

His family has the wealth and power to give him anything … except approval.

Gianni Bencivenni marks his time in lines of cocaine. One lover is the same as the next within the walls of addiction—until his family puts a contract out on his life. On the run with the last man he wants to be in close quarters with, Gianni has to decide whether his yearning for acceptance and love can overpower his need for a drug-filled haze.

Johnny “Butcher” Mascagni marks the black sins he commits. Death is his profession and ghosts of the dead haunt his waking moments. His penance for the dark life he’s led. Through all the men who have shared his bed, love is a promise that eludes him. When a former lover becomes his last assignment, Butcher must decide if he can set his demons free and open his heart again.

SLICK by Lea Bronsen:

Ex-convict Luke has been fortunate enough to land a small job as a kitchen assistant, but he’s lonely and crippled by baggage from the past.

CEO Roman Spencer also has his share of problems. It doesn’t help that a tough and hot-headed kitchen worker begins to plague his mind…and body.

The more Luke runs into Roman, the more his dark fantasy turns into attraction. If he surrenders, his thug pride will effectively go down the drain.

ADDICTIONS by R. Brennan:

“Just so high on lust” #SexySnippet from The Hotter the Love

sexysnippets-fbbanner_14_orig

Happy Sunday!!

Here are my #SexySnippets, seven sentences from The Hotter the Love, book 3 of the erotic interracial romance Hot Model Mine trilogy:

* * *

Yushka brings me to him and holds me in his arms, our chests flattening against each other and his throbbing cock pressing into my belly, long and hard. “I want a last dance.”

My heart hammers and I cling to him, my arms around his neck, for fear I’d sway and lose my balance. I’m not drunk, just so high on lust I can’t feel my legs. “B-before what?”

He doesn’t reply, but the molding hot stare he gives me says it all. Before I fuck the living daylights out of you.

thehotterthelove

River Fortuna’s wolf is awake and pacing, anticipating their first heat. Traumatized by early misunderstandings of shifter sexuality, River intends to avoid being claimed at all cost. She doesn’t plan on meeting handsome, virile Alpha Jett Reeves.

Jett is instantly drawn to River, his pheromones flooding to trigger her heat and force her sexual surrender, despite her tangible—and unlawful—means of avoidance.

Initially a mindless slave to her hormones, River comes to accept Jett past his ability to assuage her sexual need and falls in love with him. Unable to label his myriad of feelings, Jett doesn’t reciprocate, and she is devastated, realizing she is locked in a lifelong, loveless partnership.

Attacked by a rogue shifter, River wakes with no memory, and Jett must face the fact that what he felt for River all along was love—and find a way to bring her back to him.

Excerpt:

They rode the elevator to the sixth floor in near silence, the eddies of lust making the small space nearly insufferable for him, and his mate leaned against the wall as though she might slip to the floor any moment. Her brow and temples glistened with sweat and her fingers twitched spasmodically. She was coming into her full heat and fighting it all the way.

Stepping off when the doors opened, he strode in the direction the small arrow indicated and found the room within several yards. The key card gave them entrance and he flicked on the light. He shoved the cases just inside the door, blocking the heavy panel with his forearm so it wouldn’t close. “In you go, River.”

Did women trudge? His woman did, despite the trembling of her entire body. His heart ached at her trepidation despite the all-encompassing lust he experienced. Her head down, intense need radiating to pull him in, he threw the deadbolt, and then gave in to what their nature decreed.

Thrusting his hand through her thick mane, his fingers weaving among the long, silky strands just as he’d fantasized, he drew her head back and forced her to look him in the eyes. Hers were dilated, the rich brown irises nearly eclipsed by the stark black of her pupils. Square, white teeth clenched her full bottom lip, presumably to control panting, because she drew draughts of air in through her nose. He could detect the threads of resignation weaving through her vast need, her intense heat rapidly eclipsing any coherent thought. Regret that he’d caused this once again pierced his own narrowly shrinking focus—but only briefly. He lowered his head and took her mouth.

Sweetness and life burst over his senses at his first taste, and he groaned against her full lips even as his tongue made a foray past them. River totally surrendered, as female wolves do when they met their fated mate, and he barely had time for that thought—fated mate—before he wrapped an arm around her limp form. Two steps and they fell to the big bed, the mattress compressing beneath their combined weight as he ravished her mouth. She opened to let him in and gave up all the flavor that was uniquely her.

He reluctantly tore his lips away to rear up and shred the plain shirt that hid her from his view. Her lightly tanned skin filled his vision as her utilitarian bra met the same fate, and he noted with pleasure how modest her tan lines were. His wolf rose up. Mine. The growling claim resounded in the room and her eyes fluttered open and she blinked. Behind the thicket of her dark lashes, a sexual haze again blurred the rich chocolate, and her lids drifted shut.

Once they came to know one another, their coming together could be slowed and savored, but for now, he needed to visibly establish his claim. His frantic cock shuddered in agreement as he demolished the tough denim of her jeans, taking care not to score her soft skin with a claw.

With her nude beneath him, his gaze drawn to the soft, pale fur at her apex, he willed his other-self back, and his claws retracted. Lord knew what she’d seen when she’d stared up at him. Probably a wild-eyed beast intent on its succulent prey, and he blessed the Mother and the mating heat that River hadn’t screamed in fear. Only an alpha could partially shift, and it was unlikely she’d seen one in such a state before.

His own apparel fell away as he quickly stripped and then blanketed his mate’s writhing form. Velvety flesh met his own in a haze of heat and sensation.

“Please.” Her plea was strangled and all the more evocative because of it.

“I’ll take care of you,” he promised. “Always.”

“I wanna move the fuck on” #SexySnippet from upcoming antho DARK & DIRTY

sexysnippets-fbbanner_14_orig

Happy Sunday!!

Here are my #SexySnippets, seven sentences from my story SLICK in the dark erotic fantasy anthology DARK & DIRTY that releases on the 15th of November:

* * *

“I wanna move the fuck on.” Luke grabbed Roman’s chin with a couple of fingers and forced him to face him. “And no one’s gonna stop me.” He leaned over the space between them, approached his gorgeous and determined-looking face, and pressed warm, firm lips to his.
Roman gasped, but Luke held him in place while slipping his wet tongue into his mouth, bringing in the taste of tobacco. He slid the other hand down Roman’s chest, past his belt, and over his crotch, grabbing a handful of dick.

Dark and Dirty

DARK & DIRTY – Four dangerously dark and delicious stories that will awaken your dirtiest fantasies.

Introduction by USA Today bestselling author Jenika Snow.

Brennan:

Alexis Harrison is a mess. She’s managed to blow out her knee, lose her scholarship, and get hooked on pain killers. Now she’s playing mule to her dealer, who is her only friend, to support her ever increasing habit.

If something doesn’t change soon, her addiction is going to cost Lexi more than just everything.

About N.J. Young

NJ YoungI’m a Midwestern girl and a lover of coffee, live music, and horror movies, not necessarily in that order.

I’ve been writing all my life, and I honestly can’t remember a time when I wanted to do anything but write. After many years spent suffering the trials of corporate America and writing about everything from financial risk management to software user manuals to website copy about radiators (sadly, I’m not kidding), I decided take the plunge and start writing books.

I love a good love story with super hot alpha males, strong heroines, a little humor, and a lot of suspense. Sprinkle in some sexual fantasies and a few BDSM aspects, and Boom! These are only a few of the themes you’ll find in my books.

When I’m not writing, I’m probably at Starbucks, or fighting evil with the help of my husband, two children, and our houseful of animals.

Explosive Desire (Love With a Price, #4) Excerpt

explosive-desire-evernightpublishing-2016-finalimage“Look at me.” When she didn’t respond, he deepened his voice. “Harper, look at me. Now.”

She turned her head to look at him with weary blue eyes. Fuck, he hated that she looked so broken. He wanted to fix her. Or at least make her forget all the pain and potential danger right outside the door.

He opened his mouth to speak, but she stopped him with a shake of her head. “Please don’t. Don’t say it’s going to be okay. Don’t tell me there’s nothing to worry about, and they’re going to catch this guy.” She took a shaky breath. “I know everyone at your mom’s was just trying to help, trying to make me feel better.” Her fingers absently played along his. “I just don’t want you to lie to me.” She looked down at their hands.

Her words nearly broke him. He raised a hand to her cheek and brushed aside her blonde curls to cup her face and tilt it up to him. “I’ll never lie to you, Harper. Not ever. I can’t even imagine how violated you must be feeling right now. What this psycho is doing to you makes me sick to my stomach. But I can make you one promise. I will not let anything happen to you, do you understand me? I’ll die before I ever let anyone hurt you.”

Her eyes filled, and she tried to look away, but he held her face steady. “No. Look at me.” She raised her eyes again, and a tear spilled over. Luke gently wiped it away with his thumb then leaned in to press his lips against her forehead. He pulled back to look into her face. “You don’t have to be afraid, Pretty, not of me.” He brushed away another tear and stroked the back of his knuckles along her jaw. “I’m the man you can trust. I’m the man you can depend on. And I’m not going anywhere.”

“Luke…” She said his name on a whisper as the pad of his thumb stroked gently over her bottom lip. Tentatively, her tongue snaked out to lick his thumb. He stilled as her soft wetness played over the tip of his thumb. Harper searched his face as if she were waiting to see if he would pull away. When he didn’t, she sucked his thumb into her mouth.

Heat flared through Luke, and his arousal ratcheted up to eleven.

Get it together, Price. She’s vulnerable. You can’t take advantage of her.

“Harper…” He should tell her this wasn’t a good idea. When he made love to her, he wanted it to be because she needed him as much as he needed her, not because she was using him as a distraction. But when she raised her face to his and leaned in, he couldn’t deny her, couldn’t deny himself.

The second their lips met, all semblance of reasoning slipped away. The only thing in his head was her.

“Hey pretty girl, want some kandi?” A rumbling chuckle followed the question.

Mya musings were abruptly forgotten when she saw the gorgeous guy who’d appeared by her side. He held a pink beaded bracelet out to her. Oh yeah, kandi. “Um. Sure,” was all she could get out. He had sandy blond hair and gorgeous green eyes that glowed with good-humor.

Taking her hand, he slipped the bracelet onto her wrist. It was composed of neon pink beads, that alternated with pastel pink and, in the center, square white beads spelled out the word goddess. “Look at that. It suits you perfectly,” he said. He wore several other brightly colored beaded bracelets on his forearms. Some had charms on them and others, like the one he’d given her, had words like dance, joy, and party strung onto them.

Mya blinked. The guy was so good-looking he practically glowed with magnetism. She couldn’t take her eyes off of him, and her skin still tingled from where he’d touched her. She gave her head a slight shake, trying to snap out of it. “Thanks. It’s pretty.”

He leaned in close and his bare chest bumped her arm, sending a rush of heat through her. “Mind if I hang out with you? I’m Somer.” He stuck his hand out and she shook it, causing another rush of heat to curl through her. What was it about him that made her body respond so strongly?

“Um, I’m Mya. You want to hang out with me?” He was giving her one of those looks that made her feel suddenly shy.

He looked amused. “Yeah. Is that okay?”

“Sure. I guess.” She got caught up in those eyes again and the bright smile. The space was so packed with people that they were forced to stand close together, only centimeters apart, near enough to feel the heat of his body and inhale his scent. It was a mix of warm spicy cologne, shaving gel, and the musty scent of male. The gnawing hunger in her belly spiked again, and she couldn’t stop herself from checking him out. He wasn’t wearing a shirt, so there was nothing to stop her from running her gaze over his wide, firm chest and shoulders. Lower down his torso tapered into well-toned abdominals. She stopped at the white mesh shorts and felt disappointment wash over her. Oh, he’s gay.

“You like my outfit?” he asked.

“Yeah. It’s…nice.”

“Hey, we match,” he said, bumping his hip against hers.

She was wearing a white skirt and cropped tank top and had used some puff paint to draw flowers on them.

“You’re gorgeous, by the way,” he said.

His directness made her blush. “It’s nice of you to say so. I know I’m not really your type.” She winced and wished she could take back the words as soon as she said them. They smacked of insecurity. Why had she drunk so much beer?

“What are you talking about? You’re exactly my type.” He beamed another one of those smiles at her.

“But aren’t you…you know…gay?” Her cheeks heated again with embarrassment, and this time she wanted to kick herself. The alcohol had definitely loosened her tongue.

“No.”

She gestured at him with her hand. “But the outfit, the hair…and, you’re way too good-looking to be straight.”

He laughed. “Am I?”

She nodded and returned his smile. It was impossible not to, his charm was infectious.

“Well, now you’ve done it,” he said in a mock-dangerous tone.

“What?”

His green eyes sparkled wickedly down at her. “Forced me to have to prove myself.”

Before she could figure out what that meant, he pulled her into his arms and kissed her.

That’s when everything was turned upside down.
