Thanks for having me on today to tell you about Best Worst Ever. This story was my very first to be published so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I recently had my rights reverted, and knew I didn’t want this novella to simply fade away. So I decided to give my boys a bit of a spruce-up. If there was one thing he knew about Sky, it was that he was as frugal as the day was long. And, judging by the other places he’d passed along the way, he was guessing the impressive exterior of this place matched a rather swanky, if not romantic, interior. Of course, idiot. Sky had rented the place thinking he’d be with his fiancée. Not his best friend.

He parked next to his friend’s SUV and stubbornly grabbed more than he could carry at once. Why make two trips when you can do it in one? Necessity might be the mother of invention, but laziness was definitely its big, bad daddy. Laden down with a suitcase and far too many bags of food and liquor, Carey used the toe of his boot to gently knock at the front door. “Sky? You in there? My hands are full, man, come open the door.” When there was no response, he tried again with the tip of his boot. “Mr. Darcy, are—”

His sentence was cut short as the door flew open. “Jesus! Hold your horses, Logan. I couldn’t hear you with the water running. I was just in the…”

Shower. He’d been in the shower. Carey knew this, not because he suddenly had the ability to read minds. Oh, no. He knew this because there, in front of him, stood all six foot four inches of Darcy Skyler Wood… dripping wet with nothing but a towel slung low around his hips. Shit.

Don’t stare. Don’t stare at that solitary drop of water as it slowly slides its way between the hard, flat planes of those perfect pecs. And for the love of all that’s holy, do not stare at anything even remotely near the edge of that towel! But Carey never was any good at taking orders.

Dawn’s heart thudded. She hadn’t meant to say these three words. Considering her past mistakes, marrying Joe in spite of her parents’ strong warnings, it was way too early for a love declaration. She’d intended to thank Runo for his sacrifice in the cabin, for his chivalry and morals, for giving her renewed faith in love, and for offering her a future.

Yet in this moment, “I love you,” sounded appropriate. What she felt for him wasn’t what she’d feared—that she needed a strong man and would fall for the first one who crossed her path. This was real. She loved him. He was a unique and precious specimen. She would never find a braver, kinder, more respectful and selfless man than he.

He returned the kiss, but she needed to explain. She didn’t want him to believe she hadn’t thought this through.

She straightened and sat on his bedside. “You’ve set me free. I’m free.” She spread her arms like a bird taking flight from a cliff, flying on her own, unrestrained. “I feel reborn. And the kids will never again have to be afraid. I’ll never more have to fight for their survival.” She put a hand on his chest, careful not to touch his wound. “You have a heart of gold. You took a bullet for me.”

Gaze serious and shimmering, he stared for a moment, then cleared his throat. “Would you please move my pillows a little? I’d like to sit up a bit.”

“Sure.” She leaned over him, wrapped her arms around his shoulders, and pulled him up to a half-seated position. While she adjusted the pillows to prop his back, he took a long, audible breath in her cleavage, through her gown.

“Stay like this,” he said, voice thick.

She obeyed. More than aware of their sudden intimacy, she put her hands on the sides of his mattress for support and lowered her chest to facilitate his reach.

His nose touched the inner side of one breast, then moved to the other, and back, as if he didn’t know which one he liked best. “You smell so good.”

Hmmm…

Her nipples hardened. Warmth settled at the pit of her stomach.

He pulled at her gown until all of it slid up from her lower body and folded at chest level. Lifting the white material over his head, he disappeared beneath and groaned.

She drew in a sharp breath.

When his warm mouth closed over a nipple, she whimpered. He sucked on the bud while pinching the other with two fingers. A pulling sensation in her breasts sent electricity straight to her pussy. Upstairs, Caleb stretched out in the big, comfortable bed, remembering how Paul Sleeping Turtle, Mike Ivanov and he had used some stout ropes and a lot of good-natured cursing to haul the mattress and box spring and over the loft railing. Anna had stood well out of the way downstairs, laughing at their language as they’d sweated and lugged the damn things upward. That night, however, she’d rewarded him in the newly installed bed, and Mike cheerfully baited him the next day about hearing the noise from a good mile away.

He’d never brought another woman to the cabin after Anna’s death, never even wanted to. But Laurie was different. He could smell her even up here, her essence rising with the heat from the fireplace and perfuming the loft with the smell of warm, sweet female in heat and in need of a good fucking.

He had no idea why Laurie had suddenly gone into heat while he was doing the dishes, but the change in her scent was unmistakable. This week’s tease comes from my story SLICK, in the dark erotic fantasy anthology DARK & DIRTY.

Phone to his ear, Slick picks a bottle from a generous selection and spins to show it to me, lifting his brows as if to offer me a drink. The bottle has the rich gold-orange color of a bourbon.

Is he crazy? I don’t drink at work. I shake my head and walk out to give him some space. It was a nice gesture, though, making a point of treating me like his equal. I had no idea such an important person, a managerial director, apparently, could be so thoughtful. I’m too used to their looking down at me.

I arrange the coffee cups around the conference table, wheel the empty trolley to a corner, and go to the large window to have a look. Fourteen floors separate me from the ground, and rooftops of varying heights stretch into the horizon. Feels like the building is swaying.

This is power. You can drink alcohol in your work hours, come and go when you want, and have the most luxurious office on top of the city.

Still, I may be a cockroach living in a dump on the lugubrious side of town, I wouldn’t trade my miserable life for Slick’s privileges.

“No! They’re my kids, too!” A yell from the door, followed by a bang and the sound of shattering glass.

A shiver runs through me. I freeze and strain to hear.

Gasps.

Should I help him? He probably wants to deal with his personal issues on his own. When I have problems, I sure don’t want anyone to interfere.

Silence. So fucking quiet, I can hear the blood pulsing in my temples.

Alarm shoots through me. Broken glass and anger don’t do well together.

I swivel and hurry into the adjacent room.

Slick sits on the edge of the desk with a hand covering his ashen face and the other arm across his naked chest. His phone lies next to him. On one of the walls, a brown splatter narrows to a streak gliding down to the carpet, with sharp shards of glass at the bottom reflecting light.

“You okay?” I ask.

He nods, but doesn’t look at me. He seems petrified. Maybe the phone call was the drop that made the vase spill over, and he can’t handle the overload. Or maybe he’s ashamed of letting his anger get the better of him. Powerful people want to be in control, they don’t explode and destroy things. That’s what thugs like me do.

I circle his desk, find a trash bin, and squat in front of the pile of shards to help pick them up.

At last, he pushes from the table and kneels in front of me. He says something I don’t get because heat from his naked torso brushes me like the sensuous caress of a whore, and an ensnaring scent of musk mixed with cologne sneaks into the dark parts of my brain. Turning to mush, my head buzzing, I use my thick fingertips to pull the biggest shards out of the carpet slowly, placing them in the bin with exaggerated care to prolong the time I can be near him. This moment will be over too soon.

He puts a hand on mine, his fingers radiating heat.

Fuck, I can’t stand the intimacy. As if burned by fire, I retract my hand from underneath his.

He growls, “I said, be careful. You’re going to cut yourself.”

I suck in a breath. He’s referring to my trembling? My callused hands always tremble in every situation. It’s something I developed in prison. But he doesn’t know it’s normal for me. Maybe he thinks I’m a bundle of nerves and that the sight of broken glass shocked me. If he knew the things I’ve seen! Holding back a chuckle, I focus on the difficult task. Now that I’ve picked the bigger pieces of glass, miniature ones are revealed beneath, lodged between the carpet fibers.

“Didn’t you hear me?” From the hard tone in his voice, he’s used to giving orders.

For a while there, I forgot he’s a customer—thus the boss—and I the employee, the one who has to bow and give thanks for having a job at all.

Trembling hand mid-air, I gaze up into his stare and swim in the storm of emotions in his black, strained eyes, framed by long lashes. I can’t resist glancing downward, to his mustache, full lips, and bearded jaw.

Everything about him makes me sizzle. The vulnerability exposed by his ex’s phone call, dueling with the toughness he showed dealing with the suits earlier. His perfect muscles playing underneath tanned skin and a mat of manly hair. The very basic human way he kneels before a pile of glass shards, proving he’s mortal like the rest of us, while wearing one of the most expensive pant fabrics I’ve seen in my lifetime, in a luxurious office on the rooftop of the corporate-finance part of the city.

Katrina ducked down a dark narrow alleyway that led to a parking lot. Across the street was the middle school she’d attended. No playground equipment on the schoolyard, but she’d played tetherball and basketball on the asphalt. Behind the school lay the factory where the Erebus had attacked a human and left its slimy, stenchy trail. Though the attack had happened on the planet a couple weeks prior to their arrival, the Erebus wouldn’t have strayed far. They never did. She was surprised there hadn’t been more attacks, especially at the school.

She sneaked toward a dark corner of the property where many intermodal containers sat, the area blocked from the sun by a recent addition to the building. As she inched closer, her nostrils picked up the stronger, more recent stink, making her eyes water. No matter how many times she fought an Erebus, real or holographic, she never became accustomed to the sinus-burning odor of them. There was definitely one nearby.

A sharp call pierced the silence, reminding her of the sound computer-generated raptors made in the movies she’d watched as a child. She froze. If one Erebus called out to others, she wouldn’t be alone for long. Reaching down, she lifted her pant leg and pulled her zuranium blade—a family heirloom—from her boot. No matter how many came at her, none of them would survive the attack.

With a roar, an Erebus burst into the open from behind one of the containers. It lumbered toward her, red, glaring eyes focused on her. She returned its stare, muscles tense and ready to react. Before the creature reached her, she charged, holding up her blade, striking it right through the twisted vines covering its trunk. It fell back, taking her down with it and bounced when it hit the ground. Katrina pushed off the creature so not to get further tangled in its limbs. This one had thicker and fewer limbs than any Erebus she’d fought before, but she didn’t have time to contemplate the difference. Another struck, knocking her to the ground with one of huge limbs. How had it snuck up on her? She jumped to her feet, looking for an opening to jab the Erebus.

The creature kept waving its tentacles in front of its body, giving her no chance to strike. So, she pivoted behind it, catching the Erebus off guard, and ramming the blade into its back. Two down. How many more waited around the corner? And why were they keeping to the shadows? Erebus loved the sunlight, needed it to survive.

Two came at her from behind. They moved faster, struck her at the same time. She flew forward, skidding across the asphalt. The blade slipped from her hand, spinning as it sailed out of reach. She jumped to her feet, ignoring the sting of her scraped hands, and lunged to grab the blade. She leaped and spun around, slamming the blade into the closest Erebus. It hadn’t even hit the ground when she ducked away from its flailing tentacles and killed its friend. She leapfrogged the creatures to avoid getting tangled up in them. This new generation may be faster than the others, but they were dumb, hadn’t given her much of a fight.

“Is that all you got?” she yelled, hoping to attract the rest and end them quickly. There had to be more. The Galactic Alliance wouldn’t send three squads to deal with such a small Erebus threat.

“Hello?”

Katrina spun at the unfamiliar female voice. The last thing she needed was a Terran hanging out where the Erebus lurked. Great! She’d used the word Terran again. She hid the blade behind her, sticking it in her back pocket. “Um, hi. Can I help you?”

Nathan checked his watch. “Yeah, plenty. Especially if we’re only nipping to the pond. It’s probably only a fifteen-minute walk.”

“Fantastic. I was going a bit fucking stir crazy in here. I’ll grab our coats and shoes.”

Lee had disappeared into the hallway of their rented holiday cottage before Nathan had the chance to reply. Shaking his head with a smile, Nathan collected their empty mugs from the coffee table and took them into the kitchen, then got a bottle of water from the fridge. He doubted they’d need a drink during their short trek along the road, but he could just shove the bottle in his coat pocket and forget about it. At least it’d be there if they wanted it.

When he returned to the living room, Lee was just about to tie up his laces.

“I got water,” Nathan said, brandishing the bottle.

“Cool. Shoes are there.” He nodded to the chair Nathan had been sitting in. Sure enough, his trail shoes were waiting on the floor in front of it.

“Thanks.”

Within a few minutes, they were headed out of the door. Nathan locked up, pocketed the key, then checked the handle. He doubted very much the place would get broken into—they were in the middle of nowhere, after all. There were farms nearby, but the closest village was about a mile and a half away. So any thieves would have to make a considerable effort to get to the cottage in the first place, never mind attempt to break into it. Rolling his eyes at his own paranoia, he turned and followed Lee, who’d already started walking slowly along the road in the direction of the pond.

After falling into step beside Lee, Nathan pulled in some deep breaths, enjoying the fresh air after being cooped up in the cottage. It was a beautiful and cozy place, but it was supposed to be a base for them to go walking—somewhere for them to eat, sleep and shower, not to be stuck in for hours on end, staring at the walls. Or climbing them.

He admired the rainbow as they walked, its vivid colors painted across the watery sky. It seemed the clouds had literally exhausted themselves—only occasional wispy streaks of white now interrupted the never-ending blue. The sun beamed down, heating up the ground and beginning to evaporate the huge puddles. It would take some doing—one such puddle stretched across the width of the road, and they had to skirt around its edge to avoid getting wet feet.

Nathan smiled. Though the storm itself had been grim, the washed-out aftermath made everything feel fresh, clean somehow.

“You look thoughtful,” Lee said, breaking into his reverie. “A penny for them?”

“Mmm. It’s one of those things that sounds better in your head than said out loud.”

“Try me.”

Shrugging, Nathan replied. “Nothing major. Just admiring the rainbow, the sky, the clouds… Thinking how everything looks so fresh and clean after a good storm. Like it’s been purified, or something… Ugh, it’s stupid.”

Lee stopped and reached for Nathan’s hand. His green eyes were wide and filled with wonder. “No, it isn’t. Not at all—I was thinking something similar myself. It’s kinda romantic, isn’t it? Purification, rebirth, and all that.”

“In a roundabout way, maybe. I dunno.” He shrugged again.

Lee’s eyes narrowed, and his lips curved into a wicked grin. “We could make it romantic.”

“How so?”

Thank you so much for having me on your blog to share a little bit about my new release, Always.

Some of you may remember this story as The Heart of Winter which was originally published in 2011 as a four book continuing series, Enchanted, Requiem, Revelation, and Eternal. While I have written many stories since then, Winter’s story was my first published set of novels. They say you never forget your first love and that’s true. Winter remains one of my favorite heroines and has always held a special place in my heart.

We were never going to get out of California!

“Looking at a five-hour delay,” the pilot said. “Bad weather at LaGuardia.”

Fantastic.

Austin put his arm around me, pulled me close, and whispered, “Do you have any idea how stunning you are when you’re mad?”

His tempting voice broke through my irritation like a sledgehammer, and without any control to stop it a smile crept over my face. “No, I don’t. Why don’t you tell me?”

“I only have five hours to tell you, so we better get started.”

I rolled my eyes. “I doubt it will take five hours to explain.”

Austin laughed his low musical laugh then tapped the tip of my nose with his index finger. “I know. I’ll need more time.”

If Austin hadn’t been with me, I would have been upset the entire time; however what could have been a taxing event was as usual made better by his always calming presence. He took me by the hand, without protest on my part, and led me over to a more secluded area of the airport, scurrying past an onslaught of people, baggage handlers, flight attendants, and airport security as if we were the only two people in the world.

He sat down, propped his back against the wall, and nestled me between his legs. I leaned my head against his right shoulder with my two hands resting on each of his denim clad knees as he talked in a low murmur into my ear. The sounds of the airport faded away. The footfalls of strangers left. The bustle of baggage being moved disappeared. The overhead announcements completely vanished, while Austin described to me in detail why he found me beautiful.

He told me about my mouth, the way it moved when I talked, the way my eyes flashed when I got irritated, or excited, and how my face looked when I was mad or jealous. He described the curve of my eye, the arch of my brows, the furrows that gather between them when I concentrate. He told me about the color of my eyes, describing them as emeralds cut with sparkling facets of light. He spoke of how I bite my bottom lip. How he loved to hear me sing to the radio in the shower, the sound of my laugh, and the way my face looked when I was happy—luminescent and bright. He even told me he loved it when I argued with him, watching that little huff of displeasure I made right before I caved in.

I smiled because he was right. He had the ability to make me cave no matter how ticked-off I might be.

Austin told me how he loved to watch me sleep—the peaceful expressions—the sound my heartbeat made as it thrummed. He spoke about my body, the way I moved, the sounds I made when we made love—the warmth of me. Then he threw in some hot, juicy details about his body and mine that made me blush.

This started another line of conversation which prolonged the rosy red sensation to my cheeks.

Then, Austin delved deeper. He told me how my fragility showed through my strength, my insecurities through my courage—how I’m more than body, more than flesh. He spoke of me as the essence of desire, beauty, intelligence, grace; more than a single truth, a single word, a single caress, or a simple breath. He explained I am a girl, a lover, a daughter, a friend, a woman, and someday I will be a mother. He expressed his longing to have children with me, saying he couldn’t wait to see my belly rounded with our child.

“I want a little girl with your eyes, your lips, and your smile,” he said.

“Maybe I want her to have your eyes, brilliant blue that shifts into silver,” I countered.

“All right then. We’ll have both. A compromise. One with your eyes and one with mine.”

“Don’t you want a boy?” I asked.

“Sure,” he said. “How about you?”

“I would love to have your son and watch him grow up to be a heartbreaker just like his father.”

Austin’s laugh vibrated across my cheek. “It’s settled. Two girls and a boy.”

As he combed his fingers through my hair, Austin told me who I am, and who I will always be to him. He held a mirror to my soul, allowing me the reflection of the woman I should be, the woman he has made me, the woman I have become—the simple complexity of me.

This week’s tease comes from my new dark romantic suspense FIERY 10-16.

Dawn admitted, “My husband found the money.”

From the firefighter’s wild, brown eyes and hard features, her words hit home—he cared about her. He wouldn’t be so angry if he didn’t. The realization relieved some of the tension within, and the bathroom walls stopped shrinking around her. She took a deep breath, waiting for him to say something.

“And then?” he asked, after a beat of time.

She heaved her shoulders, as if to say, “That’s it, nothing else happened.” Runo—that was his name, if she remembered well—didn’t need to know about the beating that ensued, or the rape. Her intimate parts still burned from that.

It was just her luck. Any other alcoholic wouldn’t be able to get it up, but Joe did, at all times, and he used his hard, punishing cock to inflict even more humiliation.

Runo lifted his brows. “What did he do after he found it?”

She sighed, pretending he annoyed her, but inside, she jubilated. He really, really cared. Whoa, such a good feeling to have after all the bad stuff she’d endured before Joe passed out from the drinking.

Runo was not only concerned about her, he was amazingly handsome, too, with his half-African traits, tanned skin, and captivating gaze mirroring honesty. If he played the town hero card a little more, she’d fall flat for him. If she hadn’t already. He was irresistible.

He pushed from the door and took a step toward her. “C’mon, Dawn, tell me what he did after he found the money.”

“He bought booze, dass’ all.”

“Yeah?” He leaned closer, his scrutinizing gaze ping-ponging between her eyes. Clearly didn’t believe her.

“Yeah. And then he drank and fell asleep.”

“What were the bruises you showed us earlier? Huh? Is he beating you?”

Shit, the bruises. The blood drained from her head. She’d forgotten about that episode. Not about being so near the firefighter—a vivid déja-vu sensation reminded her they’d had the same closeness when she kissed him, and the memory made her breath catch—but she’d forgotten about showing the marks on her ribs. Lately, she’d developed a habit of using anything in her favor to get out of trouble. And now, what she did in the supermarket was back-firing.

He deepened his frown. “You need to tell the truth. It’s the only way we can help you.”

Ha! If he thought she’d tell him about the beatings and then have him go to the police, he could think again. The case would be dismissed, Joe would be released from custody, and, completely pissed, he would increase the punishment tenfold for sure. Take it out on the kids, too. Alarm shot through her, causing pressure on her chest. She froze.

No, she couldn’t let that happen. She needed to stall Runo, distract him, divert the subject.

What better way than to seduce him? She had plenty experience in that department. From the manner he had looked at her earlier, repeatedly dipping his gleaming gaze into her cleavage, it wouldn’t be difficult to steer him in a direction that suited her.

It didn’t matter he was a gentleman and she used his sex drive to get what she wanted. Even if that made her a hypocritical bitch. An abuser. Hadn’t she learned from the best? Sarcasm filled her with ugliness, but she needed to focus on the priorities.

Do everything it takes to protect the kids, remember!

It wasn’t her fault she’d become a desperate person. Life had forced her to be dark and manipulative.

Pfft. Playing on other people’s feelings was just one of many acts in her register.

What now? She could put a hand on his broad chest and caress him, play with his nipple, or grope his thick groin package again, but she’d already tried that and he’d been unwilling. She needed to come up with another idea.

Oh, yes. Faint.

She blinked a couple times before closing her eyes, letting her body soften, and weakening her knees. Seconds later, she slid down onto the floor and hit her head against something hard. A wall, maybe. Or the toilet. Not the most hygienic place to spread her hair and body parts, but a girl had to do what a girl had to do.

A male exclamation sounded, then a thud hit the ground beside her—he probably went down on his knees—and strong arms slipped beneath her back and legs and lifted. “Dawn! Dawn, do you hear me?” The exasperation in his voice gave her a hint of bad conscience, but she enjoyed her victim role too much, being lifted onto his muscular thighs and lying safely in his arms.

“Shit, shit, shit.” He shook her shoulders a bit. “Dawn!”

Hot breaths brushed her chest. Her nipple, in fact. Had her dress slipped in the commotion and exposed a breast? Perfect.

She fluttered her eyelids and caught a glance of him. He didn’t stare at her breast—though he undoubtedly did seconds before—but at her face, his features concerned. “Wake up, Dawn.”

His voice sounded so warm, so comforting, that alone made her feel cocooned. She opened her eyes wide and took the rest of him in.

Hard, bulging muscles tented his shirt in all the right places.

My, my, isn’t he built like a grizzly!

Joe may be surprisingly strong despite his drunkenness, but in comparison, the firefighter looked like Hulk. He must have the strength to give Joe the beating of his life.

Ha ha! She imagined her husband taking a mighty blow to the chin and flying backward in the living room, crashing into furniture and collapsing like a lifeless puppet on the floor. And then her hero—this very piece of hotness holding her in his arms now—would make passionate love to her on the kitchen counter. Make her scream.

Austin breathed through his nose as Cord leaned closer. How was he so natural about this? He held his breath as warm lips traced the stubble of his jaw. And damn his dick for firming up the second he breathed Cord in.

The heat of his friend’s body warmed him, his mind cataloguing every nuance. The wiry feel of another man’s chest hair. The sheer breadth and height of him. His earthy scent, so unlike Ember’s. His pure masculinity was suddenly alluring, when a day ago it was merely admirable.

Fuck.

His neck stiffened as Cord’s hand fit around his nape.

“It’s okay,” Cord whispered, leaning closer.

At the first brush of his lips, Austin panicked and made to jerk away but Cord’s steady gaze and strong grip calmed his instinct to flee. The heated press of his firm kiss slipped past his guard and Austin’s eyes drifted shut.

In my part of the world, “Easter holidays” equals to sitting in the sunny corner of your garden with a hot chocolate and reading. For weeks before the holidays, it’s all that people talk about, and the media is overflowing with ads and reviews of new romances and suspenseful reads.
