It wasn’t only the music that made his heart pound a wild beat #MWTease from THE AUDITION

Happy Wednesday, and thanks again to the lovely Angelica Dawson for organizing the MidWeekTeases!

This week’s tease comes from my erotic crime MMMM ménage The Audition, which will come out on October 20 🙂

While the three other men split in the crowded night club in search of more young blood, Rico brought Jaden to the bar. Spotlights threw flashes of blue, purple, and green over the classy furniture and seated patrons. On a dance floor, hip people whirled and jumped, fists pumping, to a quick prog rock tune from the Prodigy. The night was still young, but the party was full-on and the vibe palpable.

It wasn’t only the music that made Rico’s heart pound a wild beat. He leaned an elbow on the counter and turned to the kid at his side. Jaden had gained more self-confidence since they first met. His shiny gaze followed Rico’s every move, and a cute smile brightened his young face, the low light enhancing his handsome features. Being near him filled Rico with rare warmth, as if he’d swallowed brandy and a strong wave of heat washed over his stomach and chest.

Speaking of which. “You want a drink?” he asked, then remembered Jaden’s age. Dammit, he needed to sober up. He was fifteen years his senior. How could he allow himself to like this kid to a point where he wanted more intimacy?

Jaden shook his head. “No, thanks. I gotta get home soon. Mom’s gonna worry about me if I don’t.”

“But you’re eighteen?”

“Yeah.” Jaden heaved a shoulder. “But you know, mothers… And you, are you having anything?”

“I don’t drink.”

“No? Why?”

Rico stopped drinking and using drugs years ago, when his plan to poison America was taking form and he needed to stay sharp at all times. But he told Jaden, “I work hard to stay in shape,” which was true too.

Jaden contemplated him with blue-green eyes hazy and full of heat. Rico had seen enamored looks like that before, and although he’d had an exhilarating evening with Jaden and would love to repeat what they’d done, he didn’t want the kid to fall for him. Their lives didn’t fit. Besides, Rico could take a bullet anytime, so why place someone in a position where he might have to grieve over his death? It wouldn’t be fair.

No, they couldn’t engage into anything.

Jaden leaned closer, their torsos almost touching. “That thing you did after I blew you?

“Hmm?”

“You know?”

“What?”

“You don’t remember?” A boyish smile lifted Jaden’s mouth to his eyes. “You licked my lips and kissed me.”

Yes, I did.

Rico zoomed in on Jaden’s soft, full lips and fought the urge to taste them again. He needed to resist. “It was nice, but we can’t repeat that.”

Jaden froze. “Oh.”

“It’s because…” Rico the hijo de puta would say the audition was a game the four men played regularly, that what had happened with Jaden hadn’t been special, and he should go home happy he got the movie part. But Rico was also Ricardo, the human inside the hitman. He knew what being lonely felt like, and he didn’t want to hurt Jaden, a kid with his share of loneliness.
