Can a single kiss change your life?

Businessman Cole Dunbar stays focused inventing the latest techno gadgets. When he learns of his deceased wife’s betrayal, he shuts the door on any personal relationships. There’s just one problem—the sexy Dina Wright who lives down the hall. He can’t keep her out of his thoughts and fantasies. When he sees her frightened on a New York City street, he tosses aside his reservations and reaches out to her.

Dina is high on life. Not only is she starting an advertising agency and her best friend is returning to NYC, an honest-to-God hunk is sending her spine-tingling looks. Despite past betrayals interfering, the budding romance picks up momentum, but Mother Nature spins her wrath. Amidst the chaos, Dina vanishes.

Excerpt:

A single gunshot echoed in the night.

An invisible death-grip tightened his throat. The road and buildings warped. Sound faded. Cole’s fear came to fruition, the worst moment of his life.

He needed eyes on Dina now!

Cole forced his legs to move faster into the darkness. The small amount of glow, seeping around the trailer from the junker’s headlights, gave him a visual to the only other intact car, parked next to the overturned truck.

The cloud pattern shifted and the moon brightened the darkened sky. Beyond the downed trailer, demolished truck, past the crinkled unmarked car, hope soared, clenching Cole’s heart and stealing his breath. He stopped and stared, not sure if he could believe his eyes.

The moon spotlighted Dina standing in the middle of the wreckage, staring at the road, her body shaking. Fright and pain visible in her profile felt like a bullet to his chest, forcing the wind out of his lungs and weakening his muscles.

Her gaze left whatever caught her attention and she peered over her shoulder. Their eyes locked. In that moment of time, no one else existed, not the swirling bright blue and red lights approaching or the loud sirens demanding attention.

Too afraid if he ran, his legs would give out from the overwhelming emotions, he walked toward her.

Not moving her gaze from his, she pulled her lips inward and wiped a hand across her face. She’d been through so much. Instinctively, he wanted to pull her to him, feel her warmth against his chest. Afraid sudden movement might scare her, he tempered his urge and stopped in front of her. “Awe, babe.” He stroked a finger down her cheek and searched her face.

Tears welled in her eyes, and something more frightening smeared across her skin—a reddish-brown color—blood.

Welcome to my dear friend Cait Jarrod and her new release Mystic Hearts!

I’m excited to be on your blog!

Nothing like a heroine taking charge!

I love Charlene Smith’s journey from submissiveness to taking charge of her life. She figuratively slams her hands on the table and says, “No more.” She’ll no longer allow her ex-husband to control her like he had while they were married. She’ll no longer allow him to use their son as a pawn. Instead of slamming her hand down on a desk or gingerly saying, “No more,” read the excerpt below from Mystic Hearts, Book 2 of The Band of Friends, to find out how Charlene decides she can and will fight.

The venomous tone, at one time, would have had her withering. But not anymore. “Pig!”

Her ex-husband charged toward her, eyes wild, nostrils flaring.

She swung, faking high and going low. The bat connected with his stomach.

“Fuck,” he puffed and clutched his gut. “You’ll pay.” He straightened and snatched the butcher knife from the block on the kitchen counter.

Crap!

The shiny blade glistened above his head.

It was her or him. She dug deep, seizing strength from all the wrongs Andrew had inflicted on her family, fortifying her with the power for what she needed to do. She raised the bat behind her head and went for the homerun…for her…her mother…and most importantly, her son. She struck his arm. Bones cracked. The knife flew out of his hand. He stumbled backwards, holding his wrist, and fell backwards into the wall. She raised it again, aiming for his head.

The bastard is Henry’s father, her conscience screamed.

At the last second, she pulled back and clobbered him square in the ribs.

Yelping, he collapsed on the floor. “You bitch!”

She lowered her hand, clasping the handle, ready to swing. “Not another word. Get the hell out of my house!”

“I’ll be back!”

She raised the bat. “You asked for it.”

“No!” He held up his good hand and sidestepped.

Nothing is as it seems….

Temptation landed at Special Agent Larry Newman’s feet—literally. Charlene Smith captured his heart after he rescued her from terrorists two months ago. A failed relationship and being an abused child have turned him into a loner and workaholic. The scars weigh heavy on him and keep him from pursuing her. So what’s a guy to do when the woman he pines for passes out in front of him while working a case?

Battling psychological wounds from abduction is easier than coming face to face with the sexy FBI agent she’s fantasized about for months. A single mother, avoiding the drama that dating would bring to her son’s life, she allows Larry close only in her dreams. Now, she’s second-guessing her decision. Should she have a relationship with this man who makes her feel alive just by being close?

Entangled Love

A fresh start…

Emma James is on a mission to rebuild her life after the loss of her husband. When her childhood friend offers an innocent getaway to Santa Monica, she accepts thinking fun in the sun will be a great way to start fresh.

A man waiting for the right moment…

Retired professional skateboarder, Ryan Cross is a gorgeous, lovable, ladies’ man. With two skateboard parks and a fat bank account, he’s on top of his game. What could make him happier?

What looms?

Chaos and life-threatening obstacles.

Entangled Love

Chapter 1 first three pages:

A dark figure darted in front of Emma James’ watery vision. Adrenaline pumped through her veins. She slammed her foot on the brake. Skidding sideways, the car fishtailed into oncoming traffic. She screamed and controlled the wheel.

A tractor-trailer blasted its horn. The passing SUV driver stuck his hand out the window, and raised his middle finger, flipping her off, and maneuvered around her. Tires screeched and marred the road until she stopped. “Holy crap!” Her hand hit her chest. Dazed, she stared at the California highway, searching for the person amongst the palms and pavement, and attempted to control her erratic breathing, a metallic taste filling her mouth.

Were they trying to kill themselves?

On the side of the road under a palm tree, a figure cloaked in a long coat and hood, their face concealed, stood near a compact car. As if watching a slow motion movie, an arm stretched out and pointed a finger gun at her. A second later, the form climbed inside the vehicle and drove away.

“What the shit is going on?” Her hands trembled on the steering wheel. She shifted her foot to the gas pedal and drove toward the party. Memories from a year ago blindsided her: the phone call from Ryan, the police arriving, and the dreadful news that brought her to her knees. Her husband’s death still hurt as much today as it had then.

She shook herself, snapping to the present, and wiped away tears, then stretched to check her make-up in the rearview mirror. Today, a year after her husband’s death was the last day she would allow herself to mourn. She hit her palm against the steering wheel. “I will move past this.”

Another wave of memories sliced through her like a knife. Her breathing hitched. “Dear God, make the pain go away,” she said and turned the wheel into her best girlfriend’s driveway.

Rows of parked cars lined the front of the house. She inched past them toward the glowing lights and inevitable conversations yet to come.

“Eric would not want you to sit home and wallow on the anniversary of his death,” Amy said into the phone this morning.

 “Someone murdered him,” she responded.

“There’s no evidence,” Amy was quick to say. “Come on, the fundraiser will take your mind off of Eric, besides Ryan will be here.”

By the end of the conversation, she agreed to attend the charity she helped plan, but her heart wasn’t in it. A bottle of wine and her sofa was where she wanted to spend the evening.

Indistinct jazz music played from the yard heightening her already intense desire to run. She parked next to a red Mercedes, and closed her eyes.

No, I need to do this.

She swung open the car door. The previously muffled noise became clear with the saxophone booming, filling her with longing for Eric and their intimate dances.

Waterworks threatened to emerge. With a heavy heart, she leaned against the car and observed the sky. “Why?”

“It’s not a question that can be answered. It is what it is.”

 Her eyes widened.

 Eric?

The deep baritone voice, comforting and gentle, gave her a sense of safety, security. She’d give a limb to fall into her husband’s arms again, for everything to be a horrible dream.

She turned, searching and hoping against what she understood to be true.

Golden hair, instead of dark hair, fell over the tan skin on his forehead, and a grin stretched across his face. Not the man she wished back, but the one who stayed with her at every shitty turn life dished out.

He progressed toward her, a glass in his hand. His tone muscles flexed through the designer dress shirt and pants. Green eyes bored into hers. “Hello, love.”

Six feet of gorgeous male and one of the best skateboarders in the country, worth millions, he had every woman in San Francisco and Santa Monica vying for his attention.

 “Ryan.”

Warm lips touched her skin, his five o’clock shadow scraping her cheek. Years passed since a man other than Ryan had come this close. Her lids fluttered closed, enjoying his warmth before forcing them open. No. She shoved away her body’s desire for wanting such a dear friend. Depression made a person do strange things.

My Writing Process

This is a stop on a blog hop with several authors discussing their writing processes. I’ve been tagged by the lovely and talented Nikka Michaels and I’ve tagged three authors to follow my post in the hop. There are more authors to visit at Nikka’s post and you can continue hopping from there or here. What is this hop all about? It’s about authors offering others a glimpse into their work, their work schedules, and perhaps their innermost thoughts. Come take a hop on the wild side!

Before I get to the questions, I have to make sure you know about Nikka. She’s a writer of m/m erotic romance, a genre I have discovered recently. I read her Chasing Matt (co-written with Eileen Griffin) in one sitting, and boy was it good. With the right balance of steamy, romantic, a little edgy, and before all, characters to die (drool) for, you don’t want to miss it!

QUESTION TIME:

Q. What am I working on?

I have three works in progress. The erotica High Risk Fever will hopefully be completed this week—woohoo!—and I can’t wait to start the submission process with this one. In parallel, I’m writing the sequel to my first book, a dirty, gritty gangster thriller called Carnivora that explores some of the most disturbing deviances of human kind. Not for the faint-hearted. And then there’s the suspense romance Kill for Desire, a sexy, hold-your-breath cop novel that I’m co-writing with D.C. Stone 🙂

Q. How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I’m not sure how to answer this, because I’m writing several very different genres. But what I make sure to include in all of my works, whether they be erotic romance, cartoonish street crime or gory thriller, is one or more socio-political messages as well as a personal edge. My characters have reasons to be angry. Also, I am brutally honest: my stories are explicit both in terms of eroticism and grotesque violence. You get what my characters get!

Q. Why do I write what I do?

I have read a lot since I was a small child, and only on a few occasions come across a book that I could qualify as ‘perfect’ (to my taste). Therefore I wrote the stories that I wanted to read, and only in the past year dared have other people read them as well…

I have also written a few stories in response to challenges, a quite tough task as in those cases I couldn’t use my fantasies but needed to mobilize my imagination.

Q. How does your writing process work?

Either I have a clearly outlined plot in my head, like a puzzle where I know where all the pieces belong and place them at the same time—one here, one there, sometimes filling the middle before finishing a corner. That’s the easy way.

Or I have a vague idea of what I want to write about and build the story as I go. This is the case with Carnivora. I know most of the things my main characters will experience from start to finish, but there are several non-outlined sub-plots with other characters and controversial topics that I haven’t researched yet, which makes the overall story-weaving very complex. It’s exhausting.

Q. Who will we meet next?

I’m passing the question baton to three fellow writers:

Cait Jarrod is a writer of romantic suspense. Her debut novel Kidnapped Hearts was published in Feb 2013, and the novelette Rekindled in April. Look out for several new releases this year as she is a prolific writer. Cait is a lovely, funny person to chat with, and I can always count on her proofreading my stories (which is no easy task)! You can find her post here.

D.C. Stone is not only my very inspiring and humbling co-writer but a dear friend. Her writing concentrates on romance with specifics in paranormal, suspense, and erotica. She has three published books under her belt: the erotic romance High Scandal, the paranormal-military romance Feral Craving, and the erotic romance Armed and Desired. As you will see in 2014, there are many, many more to come. She shares her post here.

Michaela Miles is also a terrific author who writes the same genres as me. I love what I’ve read of her works so far and can’t wait to see her published! Here is her writing process post.

Thanks for taking the time to read about my writing process and be sure to check out Cait, D.C. and Michaela!

Kidnapped Hearts, Band of Friends Book 1 excerpt:

A hand slid over her mouth, and another grasped her wrist. The knife clanked to the floor. The hand over her mouth moved across her stomach, holding her against a hard body.
“I’m FBI.” A man’s voice whispered next to her ear. “Is anyone else here?” He lifted his fingers away from her mouth. “Don’t scream.”
She swallowed the scream he warned her against and tried to take control of the fleeing instinct and wondered how he found her so easily. “How do I know you are ________ you say?” she whispered back.
“You don’t. You’ll have to trust me.”
Trust, not something she did easily. “Why?”
“Either trust me or don’t, the choice is yours.” She felt his hot breath as he leaned closer. “If I was going to hurt you, don’t you think I would have already?”

Jot down the missing word. And don’t forget to check caitjarrod.com for the next site.

The Raffle for an ebook copy of Cait Jarrod’s Kidnapped Hearts and an ebook copy of Lea Bronsen’s My Biggest Fan will run until the 24th.
